Welcome to Morpurgo Class

British Values

As part of our British Values, we will be discussing democracy and how we can influence decision making through the democratic process.  We all recently took part in mock elections with a ballot paper of nominees to elect our representatives for School Council, Sports Council, Digital Leaders and Eco Warriers. We will be looking at how the democratic system works in the United Kingdom, and the advantages and disadvantages of this.

We will discuss the rule of law and how it protects everyone. Our school codes help us to distinguish right from wrong, and contribute to making our school a safe and happy place. Children are always encouraged to think about their actions and make good choices. Our Behaviour Ambassador helps with this.

Mutual respect and tolerance of each other are part of the values underpinned in Year 5, and the importance of accepting, respecting and valuing the feelings and views of others is embedded in the day to day learning. We will be learning about similarities and differences, and how these should be celebrated. Children are always encouraged to develop their self-confidence and self-esteem, and to express their needs and opinions.

We work together to help one another and to make Year 5 Morpurgo an amazing class!

Homework

READING - all children in class are expected to read on a daily basis to further develop their reading skills such as comprehension and fluency of reading.  Please remember to sign and write comments in children's reading journals. Certificates are presented when children have read a certain number of books:

Bronze - 25 books     Silver - 50 books     Gold - 100 books

Children are also given the opportunity once a week to use the library to promote reading.  Our library session is on a Monday afternoon.

SPELLINGS - we have spelling tests each week. Copies of the words will be given out of Friday with a test carried out the following Friday.

KNOWLEDGE ORGANISERS - these are provided for each of our Science and Creative Curriculum topics. They show the key facts and vocabulary that children will be learning. We refer to these at the beginning of each lesson so children need to read them at home to consolidate their understanding.

Homework tasks will be set at the beginning of each half term and will relate to our learning in school. Children will be able to choose which tasks they would like to complete. Homework should be returned by the end of the half term.
