Class 2H

Welcome to Class 2H!

Our teacher is Miss Hughes and our teaching assistant is Mrs Bick.

Mrs Lerigo teaches us on Monday mornings.

Mrs Arif also helps us with our learning in the mornings.

There are 30 children in our class – 19 boys and 11 girls.

Class Codes

  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  • Respect everyone and everything.
  • Be a good listener and try your best.
  • Be proud to be in the Victoria team.
  • Show good manners.

British Values

As part of our British Values in Year 2, we will be learning about democracy by encouraging the children to make decisions together.  One of the ways we will be doing this is by holding class votes.  We vote for our School Council representatives and also vote for our Behaviour Ambassador each half term.

Mutual respect and tolerance of each other are part of the values underpinned in Year 2, and the importance of accepting, respecting and valuing the feelings and views of others is embedded in the day to day learning.  We will be learning about similarities and differences, and how these should be celebrated.    Children are always encouraged to develop their self-confidence and self-esteem, and to express their needs and opinions.

The children are taught the importance of having rules and routines in place within the school and classroom, and how they contribute to making our school a safe and happy environment.  They are always encouraged to think about their actions and make good choices.  Our Behaviour Ambassador will choose a weekly 'behaviour star' to celebrate this.

We will work together to help one another and to make Year 2H a great class!

Homework is given out on Friday and is due back on Tuesday.  This links with learning carried out during the week and is chosen so that children can practise more at home and share their work with you.  Children who do not complete their homework will be expected to finish it at school, usually during playtime.  Please see Miss Hughes or Mrs Bick if you have any questions.  During holidays, children are asked to research information for their new topic work.

PE - children need to keep their PE kit in school.  Please make sure they have black pumps.  Earrings should be removed (before school if children are unable to remove them by themselves), for health and safety reasons.  We do PE on Monday and Friday.

Science and Environmental Week

We had great fun learning during this week.  We visited Orchard site to look for minibeasts and found lots of ladybirds.  In our Science learning we sorted the minibeasts in different ways.  We also used magnifying glasses to observe carefully the details in patterns, legs and wings of the minibeasts.

Picture 1 We enjoyed wearing our wellies!

Hedgehogs are lovely creatures and we found out all about them.  They hibernate during winter and we decided to make some hedgehog homes for them.  These will be put in the Nursery garden and up at Orchard site and we really hope that some hedgehogs like them enough to live there!

At the end of the week we had a Science Fair and invited our parents to come and see our learning.  Here is our display.

Creative Curriculum topics this year

Our topics enable us to develop and apply knowledge and skills in different areas of the curriculum, such as history, geography and art.  These lessons take place during the afternoon.  We do link our topic work with our English learning through stories, poems and drama.  Where possible, we go on educational visits or invite visitors in, so that we develop our learning and understanding more.

These are our topics for this year:

Seaside

We have learnt about features of the seaside. We will be looking at the work of the artist Helen Elliott who paints lovely, colourful pictures of the seaside. Hopefully, we will create our own pictures.

We decided to have a 'Seaside Fun Day' at our Orchard site. Unfortunately it rained all day! Despite that we had lots of fun and enjoyed eating some yummy fish and chips. Magical Mayhem visited to teach us some circus skills and also how to make balloon models. What an amazing time we all had!

In D&T we designed and made our own vehicles.  Do you like them?

Tell me a story...

We are looking at the book 'Tuesday' by David Weisner. This tells a story using lots of pictures but not many words.  We are developing our imagination and inference skills to tell the story and observe what is happening in the pictures.

In history, we have learnt how Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole helped the soldiers in the Crimean War.

Animals

We visited Twycross Zoo and saw lots of animals.

We visited the Discovery Centre to learn about food chains.  This will help us with our science work this half term.

The Living Planet

We learnt about different habitats and the animals which live in them.

Henri Rousseau

We have looked at the work of this artist because he painted pictures of the jungle.  We have started to create our own jungle pictures by painting the background using watercolours.
